An old friend of mine wanted to be a filmmaker. One day, he filled his car with red balloons, got out his tripod and camera, and filmed a scene of his 1980’s time travel fantasy movie behind our local shopping center. This was at some point in spring 2008ish. Looking back 15 years later, I sort of remember the plot as there was supposed to be some type of accident, a car filled with red balloons was the time machine, and the cast was transported back in time to the 1980’s. A few more scenes were filmed, but I cut ties with the friend, and he cut ties with the film. Poor movie is probably on a memory card somewhere because another version of it became reality.
Fast forward to 2010. Hot Tub Time Machine came out and it’s literally this guy’s vision. My friend’s movie didn’t have a hot tub, Crispin Glover, John Cusack, or the 80’s wardrobe, but the story was there. Traumatic event, travel to the 80’s, and find your way back. I remember calling my mother and saying, “Remember so-so’s movie he was trying to make?” To which she replied, “Yeah, why?” “Well, someone else made it, with a hot tub, instead of a car with balloons.” I still think of this often, because what if my friend finished that movie? What if he pitched it somewhere? What if?
Different things on different days motivate me to keep writing. This instance is one of them. The idea was there. The passion. If only he finished it, I wonder what might have become of his pipe dream.
Right now, I’m struggling to finish at least two works in progress. One has been stuck at 55K for at least 2 years and the other has just a little bit to go before it’s January Release. I want to push forward with both stories. I want to finish them before someone releases something similar and adds a hot tub, John Cusack, Crispin Glover and a kickass wardrobe. It’s an inside joke and now you get it.
